Dog Beds & Crates

Frequently Asked Questions

What size dog bed do I need?

Measure your dog from nose to the base of the tail while it's lying stretched out, then add 15 to 30cm. That leaves room to turn and stretch. Dogs that curl up tight can use a smaller donut dog bed. Dogs that sprawl on their side need a box bed or mattress sized to their full stretched length. Check the internal dimensions on each listing, since the outer size can be misleading.

Should I put a bed in my dog's crate?

Yes. Most dogs settle better in a crate with soft bedding, as long as they don't chew it. A flat mattress or Vetbed fleece covers the crate floor without taking up space. Teething puppies and dogs that shred bedding may do better with a tougher pad until they grow out of it. Choose bedding that matches the crate's floor size.

What size dog crate do I need?

Your dog should be able to stand, turn around and lie flat without touching the sides or roof. Measure height from the floor to the top of the head while sitting, and length from nose to tail base. Add about 10cm to each. For a puppy, buy the adult-size dog crate and use a divider so the crate grows with them.

Is a donut bed or a box bed better for my dog?

Donut beds suit dogs that curl up to sleep, and box beds suit dogs that stretch out. A donut dog bed has a raised rim that a nervous or cold dog can lean into. A box bed such as the Scruffs Seattle has a flat base with bolstered sides, so larger and older dogs can lie flat and still rest their head on the edge.

Do cooling beds for dogs work?

Yes. A cooling bed draws body heat away from the surface your dog lies on, which helps on hot days. Gel mats work best in the shade and need time to recover between uses. Use one alongside fresh water, shade and walks in cooler hours, not instead of them. We stock the Ancol Ice Paws cooling bed in small and large.
