Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I flea and worm my dog?

Treat your dog for fleas as often as the product label says, usually monthly, and worm adult dogs at least every three months. Dogs that scavenge or mix with lots of other dogs benefit from monthly worming, and your vet can advise on lungworm cover. Puppies need worming every two weeks until 12 weeks old, then monthly until six months. Keep flea treatment going through winter, as central heating lets fleas breed all year.

Are flea spot-ons or tablets better for dogs?

Neither is better for every dog, so choose based on your dog's lifestyle. Tablets suit dogs that swim or get bathed often, since water can reduce how well a spot-on works, and homes where other pets might lick the application site. Spot-ons suit dogs that refuse tablets. Many of the flea treatments in our dog health products range come in both formats.

When should I start giving my dog joint supplements?

Start joint supplements from around 12 months for large and giant breeds, and from middle age, roughly seven years, for smaller dogs. Very active and working dogs can start earlier. Most glucosamine and green-lipped mussel dog supplements take four to six weeks to make a noticeable difference, so begin before stiffness sets in rather than waiting for a limp.

What should be in a dog first aid kit?

A basic dog first aid kit should hold bandages, sterile gauze, saline for flushing wounds, a pet-safe antiseptic, a tick remover, blunt-ended scissors and your vet's phone number. Add a foil blanket and a spare lead if you carry it on walks. Ready-made options like the Mountain Paws Dog First Aid Kit cover most of this, and Leucillin spray makes a good pet-safe antiseptic.
