Training & Lunging

Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment do I need to lunge my horse?

You need a lunging cavesson or headcollar, a lunge rein long enough for your arena, and ideally a lunge whip to give clear direction. Many riders also use a roller or surcingle alongside training aids like side reins for more structured schooling. Our horse lunging equipment range covers each of these essentials, from padded lunge reins to fleece-lined cavessons, so you can build a complete kit in one place.

Should I use a lunging cavesson or a headcollar?

A lunging cavesson gives clearer, more precise cues than a headcollar because the lunge rein attaches to a nose ring rather than pulling across the horse's face. This makes it the better choice for schooling and correcting way of going. A headcollar can work for gentle groundwork, but most trainers recommend a proper lunging cavesson for regular training aids sessions.

How long should a lunge line be?

Most lunge lines and reins measure between 8m and 11m, which gives enough length for a standard 20m circle while keeping the horse a safe distance away. Shorter reins suit young or nervous horses working closer in, while 11m lines are better for established horses on full-size circles. Our range includes both lengths across several brands.

What's the difference between a schooling whip and a lunge whip?

A schooling whip is shorter, typically used from the saddle or on the ground close to the horse, while a lunge whip is longer with a lash to reach a horse working on a full circle. Both act as an extension of your arm to reinforce voice and body cues rather than to punish. LeMieux and Dublin schooling whips in this collection suit both ridden and lunging work.

How do I fit a lunging cavesson correctly?

A lunging cavesson should sit snugly with the noseband resting above the bit, secure enough that it won't twist or slip when rein pressure is applied. The jowl strap and headpiece need to be firm but comfortable, similar to fitting a bridle. Our Shires fleece-lined cavessons come in Pony, Cob, Full and Extra Full to help you get an accurate fit for lunging cavesson work.
